Ellen Daniels and Mary Daniels-Gandy planned for weeks to conduct a Vacation Bible
school for New Salem this year. This would be the first Vacation Bible School in
many years. They got the plans and all the materials they needed together but it
turned out that they could not work out getting off their jobs in the same week.
So Ellen led the Bible school herself. She had help on different days from Roshad
Aluns, Latiqua Liles, and Bonnie Daniels-Gandy, every day from Bill Roskilly, and
others who provided some of the transportation, but she led it by herself. The
Vacation Bible School was for five days, August 17-21, from 10 AM to 2 PM.
The days, Monday through Friday, were beautiful so the
children could go outside every day. Then, five minutes before two on
Friday, the rains came back, and Vacation Bible School was over.
In past years, churches mostly from the South have seen teams of youth
and adults to lead Vacation Bible School in the church. But this has not happened for
many years. Ellen and Mary decided that we needed to have Vacation Bible School and
they planned it and Ellen was here every day to lead it. This was the first tme the
church has ever had a Vacation Bible School without help from other churches or
summer missionaries.
